If you’re looking for a relaxed and scenic spot to take updated family photos, Salisbury Beach in Massachusetts is a solid option. This session took place in late September during golden hour, and it was a great choice for this family of four, soon to be five. They wanted something casual to capture their current stage of life before welcoming their third child in November.
Salisbury Beach is located along the northeastern edge of Massachusetts, just minutes from the New Hampshire border. The area has a wide stretch of sandy beach with natural dunes, beach grass, and a long horizon that allows for beautiful lighting, especially in the evening.
For families with young kids, the beach offers open space to move, explore, and play. It’s easy to park and access, and if timed right—usually a weekday evening—you’ll avoid the crowds. The light reflects off the sand and water for even, flattering skin tones and a warm glow that doesn’t require any special lighting setups.
We started about 90 minutes before sunset. This gave the kids time to warm up, run around, and get comfortable while we waited for the best light. The family wore simple neutral-toned outfits—cream, navy, and denim—which photographed cleanly and didn’t compete with the background.
Since this wasn’t a full maternity session, we still made time for a few bump-focused photos at mom’s request, but the main goal was to capture connection and interaction.
The shoot lasted just under an hour. We covered a mix of candid and semi-posed photos: walking along the waterline, sitting in the sand, and looking out over the water. When working with young children at the beach, the goal is to stay flexible and lean into the environment.
Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is ideal. The sun is low, soft, and directional, which makes for clean shadows and warm skin tones. Avoid midday unless it’s overcast.
Avoid patterns that clash with nature (like neon colors or logos). Aim for neutral or soft tones that won’t distract. Layers are a good idea—especially for wind protection.
Beaches are windy, sandy, and not very controlled. Kids will want to move. That’s fine—it actually helps create natural moments. Consider bringing a towel and backup clothes if your kids tend to go all-in with the waves.
Plan to be parked and ready 10–15 minutes before your scheduled time. Beach lighting shifts fast, and being ready early can give you more photo options.
Only bring the essentials—snacks, water, and one small blanket if you want seated photos. Everything else can be distracting or get lost in the sand.
Parks are great, but beaches give you a cleaner background, more sky, and dynamic light. There’s less clutter behind you and more room to work with. Plus, many families already spend time at the beach—it’s familiar. That comfort shows up in the photos.
I photograph beach sessions from late spring through early fall. The busiest times are June through October, especially evenings and weekends. If you’re looking to book a family session at Salisbury Beach, I recommend reaching out at least 4–6 weeks in advance.
You can view more family session details on my Family Sessions page and see other beach galleries here. Session options include 30-minute and 60-minute sessions depending on your needs. Travel is included for Salisbury and surrounding areas.
Salisbury Beach is a versatile, easy-access location that works well for family photos—especially during golden hour. Whether you’re updating your yearly portraits or documenting a growing family, it provides a clean, open space that photographs well without a lot of extra effort.
